Oblivion by Astor Piazzolla. Arranged for SATBB a cappella.
The melody in this arrangement could be sung by different voices depending on the ensemble at hand. If you do not have sopranos or tenors that can hit the high notes, transpose the melody an octave lower and let an alto or baritone take the lead part.
Also, if you have access to an accordeon or bandoneon, use it for accompaniment and/or a solo (melody) - this piece does not have to be a cappella.
Jazz på svenska. Traditional Swedish folk songs arrangements based on Jan Johansson's jazz interpretations.
The idea behind these arrangements came during a visit to Provence where I and some singer friends met a Swedish saxophone player after being on a vocal workshop.
After discussing Swedish folk music, the saxophone, vocal groups and jazz I suggested we should perform some of Jan Johansson's folk song interpretations with a mixed choir, accordeon and saxophone. A year later back in Provence we performed two new arrangements, and then in Stockholm a slightly revised arrangement where I added an upright bass and replaced the original baritone sax with an alto saxophone.
"Jazz på svenska" is the best selling jazz album in Sweden ever, released in 1964. On this album Jan Johansson (piano) collected some Swedish folk songs and recorded them together with Georg Riedel (bass).
Visa från Utanmyra for SATB, alto saxophone, accordeon and upright bass.
Visa från Rättvik for SATB, tenor saxophone, accordeon
Emigrantvisa for SATB, tenor saxophone, accordeon. Could easily be adapted for SATB a cappella.
Telegram för fullmånen by Georg Riedel and Cornelis Vreeswijk
A SATB a cappella arrangement I made for a friend. Listen to Cornelis' recording to get the feel and rhythmisation. Or, alternatively, have a listen to Lisa Nilsson's interpretation.
Tillägnan by Monica Dominique and Lars Forssell
After singing Monica's four voice a cappella arrangement I wanted to do a five voice version (SMATB). I also listened to Monica's recording she did with The Real Group. However, you will not be able to find any sheet music for that version. The founding members of the Real Group do not have it. They do have some hand written sketches by Monica.
Based on Monica's SATB-arrangement I modified it for five voices. Some, but not all, harmonies are still there as well as its form. The voice leadings, especially for mezzo, alto and tenor, have been changed quite a lot. It can be performed either by SATBrB or SMzATB.
The rights for lyrics and melody are still with Monica Dominique and Lars Forssell - so if you use my rearrangement and sheet music - please respect their copyrights (my sheet music is free to use: CC-BY-SA).
(from) 16 songs for Children (Op. 54) and Children's album (Op. 39) by Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Transcriptions for SATB a cappella.
Tchaikovsky wrote these pieces for piano, some based on existing songs and with a beginner pianist in mind (hence his collection 16 songs for children). They therefore lend themselves well for being sung by a mixed choir.
Mama (Children's album)
Morning prayer (Children's album)
Lullaby in a storm (16 songs for children)
Jobim/Moraes Bossa standards by Antônio Carlos Jobim/Vinicius de Moraes
Água de beber
One of many popular bossa songs by Jobim/Moraes - my inspiration comes from Astrud Gilberto's interpretation. There are also English lyrics sung by Frank Sinatra if you'd rather, but I have not put them in the score. When rehearsing this piece I had help from a Brazilian Portuguese speaker and learned that it is important to use a Rio de Janeiro accent. A São Paulo accent for example will not do!
For mixed a cappella.
Insensatez / How Insensitive / Åh så intensiv
Lyrics in Portuguese (Moraes), English (Norman Gimbel) and Swedish (Lill Lindfors). For mixed a cappella.
Mostly inspired by Lill Lindfors and partly Frank Sinatra.
Happy new year by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson
This is an arrangement I did for some singer friends who wanted to sing this popular Abba song at a new year's party.
Al Jarreau
I listened to Al Jarreau in the 80's but then did not pay him much attention until 2022 when I went to an Al Jarreau tribute concert at Fasching (one of the classic jazz venues in Stockholm). That concert inspired me to make these arrangements that are close to Al's versions. They are for mixed a cappella, one version for a SATB-quartet (as an exercise I forced myself to arrange for only four voices) and the other for a SMATB-quintet.
Not like this (SATB), Not like this (SMATB)
Black and brown (still in the works...)
More than this by Bryan Ferry
One of the choirs I am a member of got a request for performing "More than this" at a wedding. I arranged it for mixed choir a cappella.
The arrangement closely follows Roxy Music's recording.
George Michael
I made these arrangements for a service in church themed "George Michael".
Going to a town Originally written and performed by Rufus Wainwright, but covered by George Michael. For mixed a cappella.
Star people Written and performed by George Michael. My arrangement follows his live performance and is for mixed choir, electric bass, Rhodes piano and possibly also percussion and guitar.
I can't make you love me by Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin. I was mostly inspired by Bonnie Raitt's wonderful recording (George Michael's is beautiful too). Mixed a cappella.
I'm your man Originally performed by Wham! and written by George Michael. For mixed a cappella.
Jazz standards
My funny Valentine This arrangement is for SSMzMzAA a cappella. Please listen to Radka Toneff / Steve Dobrogosz's album "Fairytales" for inspiration! That album is one of my top 10 desert island recordings.
Have yourself a merry Christmas Arranged for SATBrB a cappella (add beat-box to taste).
The way you look tonight (Sången) (still in the works, will use Beppe Wolger's Swedish lyrics).
Original compositions
Some compositions I made when studying composition and arranging at Umeå University.
Invictus A SATB-composition based on William Ernest Henley's poem "Invictus".
Tidig gryning A SATB-composition based on Edith Södergran's poem "Tidig gryning".
Le pont Mirabeau A SATB-composition based Guillaume Apollinaire's poem "Le pont Mirabeau" and inspired by Francis Poulenc's choral works.
